** ''--[JDuprez]: I don't think so. Sure Java and Patterns stuff is not completely foreign to people interested in jspWiki usage and development, but numerous sites, including Wikis, already exist, and are more closely updated and documented, and draw more audience. Better link to them from some bridge page, or include interwiki links. Why bother fixing the broken definition of [http://www.jspwiki.org/wiki/NullPointerExceptions?version=3], since this topic is hardly a concern for jspWiki usage? Actually I eventually edited this page to what I think would benefit to a MereMortal at least...'' |

!! Restricted areas |
|
Some pages on this site expose restricted access. Mostky for site administration puprose, related to the way the engine deals with some configuration options. For example: |
* SpamFilterWordList contains words used to reject spam edits. For obvious reasons the site mainteners won't let the general public edit this page. |
** ''However, any well-known person gets access; just ask JanneJalkanen.'' |
* RejectedMessage contains the text of the message displayed when the engine refuses an edit. Again only admins will edit it (--[JDuprez] but why can't we ''view'' it?). |
** ''I already put view permission on it.'' |
* --[JDuprez]: the [About] page is locked for viewing, it isn't clear to me why. I expected to find there the site's charter and informatyion about the engine and platform running it... |
** ''Oops :). I'll fix it.'' |

There isn't a full-fledged notion of ''user account'', but anyone who contributes is encouraged to identify himself, and create a [home page|CategoryHomePage], and either register in the [Users List] or sign in the [Guest Book]. |

Isn't there some techniques to make spamming edits more difficult ? Like, adding a field in the edit form requiring to enter text melted in a blended image, or asking today's date, or whatever. Nothing that actually prevent spamming, but at least renders it harder, without hampering too much well-intended edits. |

''Because JSPWiki is largely used within organizations, and rarely outside firewalls, captchas are quite difficult to do effectively. In addition, as far as I can tell, all spammers on jspwiki.org are actually human beings (working on minimum wage), who add spam manually. Captchas and other things are directed against bots. --JanneJalkanen'' |

! Why not require login to edit pages on this site? |
|
Granted, this will not prevent human spammers, but will just render their work a bit more painful. |
OK it's not so difficult to create a new account each time, but it's one more hassle to the mischieves. Advertisement Spam is ruled by economics: it's a matter of how cheap it is to spam sites/emails compared to how much it gives back. The return on investment is probably already very low on this site, where most of the audience is already fairly familiar with internet's gems and traps. Making spam is little less cheap may ruin advertisement spam economic balance. |
|
All that based on the assumption that well-intended visitors will not find it too much of a hassle to login once a day (this is a fairly common practice on forum boards, mailing lists, and even usenet). |
|
As a collateral advantage, forcing login to edit will make edits less anonymous, which I deem is a good thing (and the well-intended may still register under a fake name to post anonymously). |
