WebDav lets you treat a web server as a real writable file server.
Lots of popular tools have built-in support for DAV including Windows XP, Office, Macromedia tools, Adobe tools, etc.
Apache are producing SLIDE, a DAV content management system. Then there's SubVersion a DAV based wanna-be replacement for CVS.
