Yes, it's a good book. Not perfect, but good. I recommend at least reading it once.

Kernighan & Pike's "Practice of Programming" is more erm... practical, but includes lots of good theory inbetween the examples. And is written with a lesser amount of arbitrary provocation mixed into the dough.
